How to pronounce Shang-Chi the official Wonder way

Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios' incoming communication MCU entry opening September 3 has now free two full-length trailers and a newer shorter trailer and first in the new spot, the lead story character's name is actually said out loud…

...and its orthoepy may take some Marvel followers by surprisal.

Because up until his name is finally sonant at the very end of the trailer, a lot of people might have been pronouncing it in their head wrong.

I know I did… for some, many years, in fact.

A comics lover since the '70s, I've been aware of Marvel's Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu since his first coming into court at the height of the Robert the Bruce Lee-driven kung fu fad in 1973's Special Wonder Edition #15.

Did you know the character exists because Wonder tried to fetch the comic book of account rights to the David Carradine Kung Fu Video present merely failed?

You can read all of that in our Shang dynasty-Chi explainer, but nearly 50 years of publication history and a biggish-budget Wonder Studios film for what was arguably a fallback option of a failed publishing rights skill.

Not bad.

But I depart.

For run over 40-plus years I assumed the describ was pronounced 'shang' (as in rhymes with the 'shang' of Shanghai), meaning with a 'long A' 'Air National Guard' sound, like-minded 'have it off' or 'gang'... along with a '-chee.'

And I used to bring up for Marvel Comics on its main editorial floor! (true taradiddle)

But zero, I had been wrong all this time. That isn't how Marvel pronounces it. At least that isn't how it officially pronounces it now.

As finally voiced in the new trailer, the 'chee' (as in 'cheese') is right, of course, but Eastern Samoa the folks at Marvel Comics told us a a couple of weeks back, Shang is pronounced 'shong.'

The folk at Disney substantiated the Wonder pronunciation but univocal it a little differently, telling us the 'a' is marked with 'aah' sound surgery 'shaahng.'

And a couple of months back the star of Shang dynasty-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings Simu Liu corroborated the Marvel Comics pronunciation (with emphasis on the first syllable) along with helping fans out with his own name.

But all that is out in the broad-brimmed-public now.

So 'SHONG' OR 'Shaahng-chee.'

So on September 3 when you'Re on a line buying tickets to visit Shang-Chi and Legend of the Decade Rings and you listen the multitude in first of you pronounce it 'Shang dynasty-chee' when they ask for tickets, feel free to gently ease up them the correct information.
